Water availability is decreasing while water insecurity is increasing
In Australia and around the world we are essentially already fully utilising our freshwater resources. In fact, in many areas we have been over exploiting our water resources for years. Now that rainfall seems to be decreasing and underground aquifers depleted many areas around the world are beyond crisis and way into disaster.
For years agricultural production has mined underground water resources to make up the shortfall from rainfall. People have needed to drill their bores and dig their wells deeper and deeper year after year for decades. Rather than changing and adapting their farming methods to use water more efficiently that have continued to use water at an unsustainable rate. They are literally getting to the bottom of the underground water barrel. Worse this is occurring while the demand for water is increasing.
Modern Agriculture: A future environmental impact avalanche
Just as many industries are moving to reduce their environmental impact the agricultural industry is set to exponentially increase its footprint.
The footprint of the agricultural industry is on course to grow exponentially because the standard solution is to drive water efficiency and productivity with technology fueled by the massive expenditure of energy and other resources.
